overview
“Experimental Typography and the Need for the Experiment” was published by Dutch graphic designer Wim Crouwel in the special 1980 edition of Idea Magazine, Typography Today. Crouwel specialized in experimental typographic design, and his “Experimental Typography” article argues that experimentation is necessary in design. He asserts that experimentation for expression should be separated from experimentation for functional research, but clarifies that the exploration of one pathway can lead to solutions for the other.

This booklet contains the Wim Crouwel essay, “Experimental Typography and the Need for the Experiment.” The straightforward type used for the article juxtaposes the experimental type used as graphic elements. The experimental type was generated by scanning pages of Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon, with the distortions created by moving the book during the scan.
